fly the seven seas

Observations of a Sydney girl rocking Germany

Honouring the summer of summers

It’s been quite a while since I’ve posted – more than 9 months in fact. And sadly – the grey days where I left off are just around the corner. It’s been a busy 9 months and i’ve had flythesevenseas too often on my mind that its embarrassing that I haven’t simply just pushed myself a little. But here I am.

So before the grey days return, I have to say thank you. Thank you for being graced by the summer of summers this year. My third summer in Munich (and Germany) has come to a close, followed by dreamy, golden Autumn (more to come).

Summer in Munich was very sweaty. Sydney sweaty. A stinker as we would say back home. And I loved it.

For weeks across the summer months, the daily temperature happily hovered above 30 degrees – something Germany hadn’t seen since the glorious summer of 1964.

We were blessed with endless sunshine, sticky afternoons and, as the germans love to say, tropical nights (“tropische Nächte) – along with the odd evening thunderstorm providing a brief respite from the heat. And with the coconut oil liquified in the cupboard, I patiently anticipated (and prepared myself) summer’s best friend. The cockroach.

Three summers in and I’m still yet to be graced by a cockroach in Germany scurrying passed your feet on a hot, summer evening. A weird observation – but only because they are a part of the usual summers I knew. What gets me most is, if the common household cockroach in Australia is called the german cockroach – where the bloody hell are they!??

Cockroaches aside – one of the best things about this top weather was that there has been no reason to escape Munich in search of better weather. It pretty much doesn’t get any better. While a trip to the Greek islands, the Italian riviera or Spain’s coast is never a bad idea – Munich’s top weather gave me more than I’ve bargained for this year. It must be a sign of appreciation from the heavens for having stuck through the long, grey days of winter.

Instead of a trip to the Mediterranean this year I took advantage of Munich’s summer of summers;

I could use summer as a reason for my blogging hiatus but let’s be honest here. I’ve let life, work and “priorities” become an excuse not to write. Despite the stories I’ve gathered throughout this year – through travels (Australia, Paris, Madrid, London, Austria, throughout Germany) and while living e v e r y  s i n g l e  d a y , I’ve let myself down by not writing. So here I am again. Writing for me. Writing for you. I’m back.

Here’s to the summer of summers, to fresh starts and the cold knocking on my door.
